Proof Coins
Proof coins are produced initially as samples to determine the quality of the die and the mint would later keep the proof coins as their archival samples, however due to popular demand, in modern times many mints offered proof coins in special collectible sets to enthusiastic numismatists, or coin collectors. It should be emphasized that "Proof" is not a coin grading standard, though most proof coins are usually in excellent condition as it is usually a collectible items, and therefore not subjected to the wear and tear of daily circulation.
Proof coins features difference appearance that can be easily distinguished with normal Brilliant Uncirculated bullion coin, features include sharper rims and design, as well as smoother "fields" (blank areas on coin), this results as the die is often polished prior to strucking the coin. Another obvious difference is the frosted appearance on certain parts of the designs as modern dies are often treated with chemical deliberately to produce that effect. In the past, the dies are often subjected to sand blasting or matte proof to achieve similar effect.
