The American Gold Eagle
The American Gold Eagle is the official gold bullion of the United States. It is issued in 1986 under the Gold Bullion Coin Act of 1985 by the United States mint, the golden eagle coin is backed by the United States mint to contain the stated amount of actual gold content in troy ounces. The American Gold Eagle coin is recognized as a source to fund the government sanctioned Individual Retirement Account. The coin has a purity of .9167 (22 karat) gold with an additional alloy of silver and copper to produce a more durable coin. The source of the gold has to be acquired within the United States.
The obverse design depicts a full length figure of the Lady Liberty from a rendition of Augustus Saint-Gaudens, holding a olive branch in her left hand and a torch in the right, the figure stands with the Capitol building in the left background. The reverse design features a design by sculptor Miley Busiek depicting a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her hatchings.
The golden eagle coins are offered in denominations of 1/10 oz, 1/4 oz, 1/2 oz, and 1 oz. Proof versions are in production from the West Point mint in New York and carry the West Point mint mark ("W") beneath the date (read more below)
