Also known as the Vienna Philharmonic Coin, the coin is issued as a tribute to the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra. The reverse design of the coins depicts the musical instruments used in an orchestra, whereas the obverse depicts the great organ in the Golden Hall in Vienna's Musikverein, the concert hall of the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra.

The gold coin is struck in 99.99% pure gold (24 carats), making it one of the purest gold coin in the world comparable with the Canadian Gold Maple Leaf. The Vienna Philharmonic Coin is issued yearly with the same design, and it has been the best selling gold coin in 1992, 1995 and 1996 according to the World Gold Council. The coin is offered in four denominations, 1 troy ounce (face value €100), 1/2 troy ounce (face value €50), 1/4 troy ounce (face value €25) and also 1/10 troy ounce (face value €10), there is also the special issue of 1000 troy ounces which carry the face value of €100,000.
