The American Silver Eagle

General Description | Technical Specification

The American Silver Eagle is the official silver bullion coin of the United States. First minted by the United States Mint on November 24, 1986, production later extent to the Philadelphia mint (the coins minted here carry a “P” mintmark). Earlier proof versions of the silver eagle coins were minted at the San Francisco mint bearing a “S” mintmark, but later on were shifted to the West Point Mint in New York, where the coins carry a “W” mintmark. The American Silver Eagle is only offered in 1 troy oz denomination which has a face value of USD 1 and is guaranteed to contain one troy ounce of .999 fine silver. The silver eagle coin is authorized by the United States Congress and its weight and content is backed by the United States Mint. Thus the American Silver Eagle can also be used to fund the IRA investment.
